TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE
Check Your CONFIG.SYS File:
--------------------------
If you are having trouble with the program, make sure that these statements
are in your CONFIG.SYS file: FILES=30 and BUFFERS=15
If the number in the FILES= or BUFFERS= statements is greater than those
illustrated, then do not change them. The CONFIG.SYS file is found on the
C: drive in the ROOT directory. You can edit the CONFIG.SYS file with
any text editor or wordprocessor. Make sure that when you save your changes,
you save the CONFIG.SYS file in an ASCII, TEXT, or DOS format.
Check Your Available Memory:
---------------------------
If you have less than 500k of available RAM, you may experience a
problem when using The Graph Tracker as a program shell. If you are running
The Wall Street Tracker or The Mutual Fund Tracker without The Graph Tracker,
you should have at lease 350k of available RAM. To check this with DOS 4.x
or earlier, you will need to run a DOS program named CHKDSK.EXE to find
the amount of available RAM. When using DOS 5.x or later, type MEM at the
DOS prompt and press [ENTER].
I Don't Get Online Help:
-----------------------
Start The Wall Street Tracker by typing WST at the DOS prompt and press
[ENTER]. Start The Mutual Fund Tracker by typing MFT at the DOS prompt
and press [ENTER]. Online help is not available while viewing graphs.
The Programs Won't Install or Run After Installation:
----------------------------------------------------
If you have a PC-Kwik cache on your system and you can't run the program,
do one of the following:
* Use the LOADFIX command, supplied with DOS 5, to start the program.
* Run MS-DOS 5.0 in conventional memory.
* Disable asynchronous reads on the PC-Kwik cache.
For information about the LOADFIX command, see Chapter 4 of the Microsoft
MS-DOS Getting Started guide.
Another reason may be that you got a corrupted archive or the download may
have had errors. Call Keith's Little Software Shop, The Tracker Support BBS,
to download error free archives. The phone numbers are (512) 894-0383 with a
HST 16.8 / V.32bis modem and (512) 858-7564 with a ZyXEL 16.8 / V.32bis modem.
The file names to download are:
WALST71D.EXE (352k) - MFTRA36E.EXE (412k) - TRACUT26.EXE (581k)
These files are self-extracting archives. If you would like to receive
these programs by mail, then send $5 to: Tracker Disk, P.O. Box 33280,
Suite 195, Austin, Texas, 78764-0280. Be sure to indicate what type of
disks you use.
If you are sure that the disk or archive are not the problem, change to the
proper directory and type WALLSTRT at the DOS prompt and press [ENTER] to
run The Wall Street Tracker. Likewise, type MFTRACK at the DOS prompt and
press [ENTER] to run The Mutual Fund Tracker.
I Cannot Connect to The Tracker Support BBS at High Speed:
---------------------------------------------------------
If you have a USRobotics Dual Standard (HST 16.8) or V.32bis modem, you can
connect at High Speed by calling (512) 894-0383. If you have a ZyXEL (16.8)
or V.32bis type modem (most High Speed modems are in the V.32 category), you
can connect at High Speed by calling (512) 858-7564. If you don't have a High
Speed modem, you may call either number to log-on to The Tracker Support BBS.
Also see the next suggestion.
I Cannot Connect to The Tracker Support BBS:
-------------------------------------------
Run your communications software program. The communications program should
place you in Terminal Mode where you can enter AT commands. If you are not in
Terminal Mode then consult your communications software manual to find out how
to enter AT commands.
If you have a Data/Fax modem, make sure you are in Data Mode. Also make sure
that your modem is set in Auto-Reliable Link Mode. This mode will allow the
modem to fall back to Normal Mode and stay connected if an error correction
connection fails. Otherwise the modem may just hang up leaving you wondering
why. Consult your modems manual for the AT command(s) to issue.
Before calling, enter this command:
AT&F and press [ENTER]
Now call The Tracker Support BBS. If you still cannot connect, enter this
command:
ATZ and press [ENTER]
Now call The Tracker Support BBS again. If you still cannot connect, turn
off your modems data compression. Some modems are different in this area so
please read your modems manual to find out which AT command(s) to issue.

As an incentive, if you report a valid problem or a way to fix a problem,
you will be sent a $5 discount certificate. If you are a registered user,
you will receive a certificate entitling you to a free copy of the next
version release.
Please give the name and version number of the program you are having
trouble with. Also list the key strokes you press to get to the area of the
program where you are experiencing the problem. Along the way explain what
happens on the screen with each key stroke. When you get to the problem area,
explain it. For example:
Dear Tech Support:
I am using The Mutual Fund Tracker, Version 3.6e.
I type MFT at the DOS prompt and then press [ENTER]. I get to the main
menu, then I type 2 and then press [ENTER]. The Load or Edit Data menu
comes up. I then type 1 and press [ENTER]. The data set loading menu is
then displayed on the screen. When I press the arrow keys to select a data
set to load, the highlight bar does not move. I am unable to load a data set
to work with.
